7 Movies to Help Kids Under the Age of 12 Understand Race in America

There’s a range of emotions we’re all experiencing as race relations in this country continues to escalate. All those emotions come to a head when we try to pull together the right set of words appropriate enough to explain the current state of affairs to our children.

I still don’t have all the words. My plan of attack has always been to instill Black Pride in my children, but not even pride in self can shield them from racial profiling or discrimination.

My cousin and fellow Mommy Making Moves advocate asked her Facebook Friends for movie suggestions to explain the current state of fairs. Her tribe responded. I’d like to get more suggestions that can not only be used to educate our kids but socialized to our co-workers and non-black parent friends.

I truly believe that if we raise our kids to respect EVERYONE no matter the color of their skin, social class, sexual orientation or religion, the world will change.

The Color of Friendship

In 1977, two girls from opposite sides of the world come together and change each other’s lives. Young, white Mahree Bok (Lindsey Haun) lives in apartheid South Africa with her wealthy family. Piper Dellums (Shadia Simmons), the daughter of a black U.S. congressman in Washington, D.C., prepares to welcome Mahree to the U.S. for a semester abroad. Mahree is surprised to find her host family is black, and Piper is stunned that Mahree is white. Each will have to question the assumptions she had.

Our Friend Martin

Our Friend, Martin follows a young Black student as he time-travels to different parts of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and explores racism during the civil rights movement. It also shows what life would be like now without the impact of MLK and the civil rights movement.

The Hate You Give

Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Hidden Figures

Three brilliant African-American women at NASA — Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) — serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.

Sounder

The Morgans, a family of poor black sharecroppers in the Depression-plagued South, struggle to find enough to eat despite the help their hunting dog, Sounder. When father Nathan (Paul Winfield) resorts to stealing food, he is captured by police and sent to prison, and his wife, Rebecca (Cicely Tyson), is left to care for their son, David (Kevin Hooks). Though Sounder has run away, David never gives up hope that his dog will return, just as he believes that he will see his father again someday.

Pride

In 1970s Philadelphia, Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), who is driven by a love of competitive swimming, fixes up an abandoned pool building with the help of a janitor named Elston (Bernie Mac). But when city officials mark the place for demolition, he fights back by founding an all-black swim team. Facing racism, violence and a hostile city official, Jim struggles to prepare his novice swimmers for the state championships.

Remember the Titans

In Virginia, high school football is a way of life, an institution revered, each game celebrated more lavishly than Christmas, each playoff distinguished more grandly than any national holiday. And with such recognition, comes powerful emotions. In 1971 high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the very foundation of football’s great tradition was put to the test.
