I Get It From My Mama. How My Mom Influenced My Love of Art.

Growing up, my home was always full of Afro-centric statues,  oil paintings, abstract paintings and historical figures. Who else had a picture of Black Jesus, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and Harold Washington?

Even the clothes my mom wore had remnants of artistic expression; Think of Nefertiti necklaces, black power t-shirts and bold prints. Her style was most definitely a nod to the Hip Hop culture that was heavy in the 80’s. I loved every minute of it. It was creative. It was free. It was me!
My mom was a reflection of her musical and artistic cultural surrounding, as to am I. She inherited her love for books, music and art from her mother and I got it from her. One day, maybe the torch will continue with my daughter – that’s a whole different conversation. Because, the way my eggs are set up right now lol.

The Chicago Picasso is an untitled monumental
sculpture by Pablo Picasso in Chicago, Illinois.
Artistic expression is apart of who I am. It’s a natural extension to my passion for verbal and written communication, which are also forms of artistic expression. My love for poetry is another blog post in it self. My heart beats creative juices. I’ve successfully integrated myself into the corporate landscape, but please don’t be fooled. I take my creativity to work with me everyday.
Chicago is a bold supporter of the arts. You can’t turn a block without seeing a mural symbolizing the melting pot of a community or historical landmarks with gorgeous detailed craftsmanship. Downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park is filled with bold structures, giant statues and monuments displaying the artistry that is Chicago.
Creativity is just apart of who we are as Chicagoans. Unapologetically bold and creative! Research from the University of Pennsylvania proves that a greater focus on the arts in a city creates social cohesion, better civic engagement and improved child welfare, and it also decreases poverty.

Now, I’m not totally sold on art decreasing poverty. I will say that being able to express yourself can contribute to higher self esteem and a feeling of accomplishment. School is tough for many people, especially if you’re not gifted with a photographic memory for studying math or reading. I’m a little bitter about my lack of memory capacity, if you can’t tell. It’s cool, I eventually made it out of college.

Art is essential to life. Before there was pen and paper there were hieroglyphics. I challenge you and your kids to find alternative ways to express your thoughts. You or your kid may just be the next Basquiat.

Locked in a Room with a Zombie Review

When my best friend said “I want to do something different for my birthday”, I knew we were all in for a treat. This woman never disappoints when it comes to events. And a night out with the girls is always filled with adventure. No boring chicks over here.
In a group text we got the message “I want us ALL to do this activity called “Locked in a room with zombie.”
Zombie! Room! Locked! Isn’t Halloween over, I thought, but in my group of girlfriends the birthday girl always wins.
She sent out the details to purchase tickets online. Bucket List Productions, the brains behind the zombie room, was nice enough to add a 10:30pm show just for us. Bucket List Productions has been putting on this performance for over a year, Travelling to more than 20 cities.
That made me feel a little better. Someone would’ve shut them down by now if the zombie had actually bitten someone like the disclaimer warns.

We all made it safe and sound to 400 s. Michigan Chicago, IL. The location wasn’t exactly covered in flashing lights. You could easily miss the kindergarten construction paper slapped on the door that read, “Enter here for Locked in a Room with a Zombie.”
The girls night out was in action. The host, a charming performer that entertained us with what sounded like a creative British accent, set the tone for the night.
He gave us the deets on the crazed zombie we paid $30 to be attacked by and ran down the rules. No punching, slapping or spitting on the zombie, no phones, no pictures of the zombie. Nothing too ridiculous.
It was time to get locked in for an hour with a zombie. One of the girls quickly began to second guess her decision to be apart of the theatrics. “YOLO, you’ve seen much worse than a zombie,” I told her.
Any who we headed into the room, huddled up like a group of Rugrats scared but ready for an adventure.
And that’s when it happened…
Haha did you think I was going to tell you what happened in the room. Nope you’ve got to go yourself
Enter at your own risk 💀💀💀

Fear of Success/Failure- Are You Sabotaging Your Life?

It’s amazing how many people are afraid to fail and in return live in a mediocre life avoiding success. It’s amazing to me to witness the potential on street corners and clubs. To most people these people are hopeless but to me I see fear. I see fear of change. I see winners with a losers mind set. I had a long conversation with my cousin and while she’s border line genius no one told her how to fail. She’s afraid to try anything because she doesn’t want to fail. She brought light to a common issue in our community. If this bright young woman that’s working full time and in college fulltime feels this way, there must be others.

Sadly, No one told her that sometimes she would try her hardest and it still wouldn’t be enough. Someone failed to tell her that when she fails to not live in her failure but get up from that failure with a lesson learned. Parents are pushing kids to succeed but leaving out the very important details about failure. This is indeed the reason we see teen suicide, depression and disobedient behavior. No body’s saying that every kid, teenager and young adult have to be perfect.

I figured things out on my own. I realized there was no perfect life, just the one you decided to live. My mother did always say do your best and if that’s not enough, that’s ok you’re good at something else. Our children need to be encouraged to succeed but they must also be trained to fail. The need to never feel ashamed of trying because in that very moment they tried they succeeded.

Our society isn’t failing, we’re simply not trying. We don’t care to succeed because we can’t get over the thought that we may fail. Dream chasing is going after what you want repeatedly without apology. Goal reaching is attaining what you want without excuses.

No matter what you want in life whether it’s the corporate boardroom, flashing lights, business owner, blue collar worker or whatever. Failure is a part of life and you are not alone. We all fall down the key is to brush yourself off and try not to fall in the same place again.

Happy Mother’s Day – 12 Gift Idea’s that Any Mom Would Love

Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children.

                                                                      ~ William Makepeace Thackeray

I believe Sophia Loren said it best, “When you become a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. You always have to think twice; once for yourself and once for your child.” Being a mother takes an extreme amount of dedication and hard work; therefore, every day is really mother’s day if you ask me.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, here are several gift ideas that will be sure to put a smile on any mom’s face. Hopefully, you will take advantage of this time, because some ideas require a reservation or a bit more mullah.
  • Go to church with her
  • Bake her something tasty
  • Create a heartfelt poem or painting (bring out the inner Picasso or Maya Angelou out)
  • Start a Pandora bracelet
  • If the weather permits, then plan a picnic
  • Make or Buy a card that express your unconditional love for her
  • Take her for a night on the town (be her personal tour)
  • Send something to her workplace (it could be something as simple as flowers or a pair of tickets to an upcoming event)
  • For that candle lover of yours, add to her collection (try Pacifica or anything from Bath and Body Works)
  • A gift card to her favorite venue is always a great options for the mothers that are a bit picky.
  •  Relax and join your mom on a spa day retreat.
  • Take a weekend road trip to her favorite establishment (e.g. Sweetie Pies, Chicago’s Chicken & Waffles, etc.)

However you choose to spend May 12, the most important thing is that you that you show your love and appreciation for that special woman/women who gave you life and/or helped you experienced it to the fullest.

Beware of Dream Killers

Don’t fear above average thinking! It’s ok to want more out of life and the greatest accomplishments start as simple ideas. I talk to people that are afraid to dream because they are surrounded by dream killers. It pisses me off – No one has the authority to kill a dream, especially those that wouldn’t lift a finger to help achieve the dream anyway.

Dream and Act on those dreams like your life depends on it.

Your Dreams Matter! Struggle with a Smile

Morning Move Makers – Life is for the living. Trying to survive often becomes the goal of the week, hell the day for many of us! Know that those Wishes in your head matter. Those places you wish to go and people you hope to meet can happen. Unfortunately nothing is easy so your dreams require work, faith and direction. The greatest successes came after struggle. Don’t give up, your dreams are waiting on you!

Danny and Dior

From MommyMakinMoves Danni M. – Before I became a mom I didn’t realize all it takes to be a mother. In order to be a good parent you have to put in work, love, attention, time, compassion and the list goes on. All of this while still growing/ maturing into your own. Grooming to be the woman you’re destined to be. With that being said as a mother it’s easy to forget to eat because you’re focused onmaking sure the kids ate, put your wants and pleasures aside to make sure your child has all they need. Pass on your free time to help with homework and give affection. In so many words its easy to give so much to pour in your child/ren that you forget to replenish yourself. I’m so grateful for mommymakinmoves.com, it’s all about empowering mothers, it’s ok to be a mom on the move! Taking care of business and taking care of home but remembering to take care of yourself. Many of my fbf are mothers and I see your hustle and the wonderful mothers you all strive to be. Along your journey if you need some encouraging words, advice,or just that push when the going gets tough check out this site. Lets encourage each other as the beautiful hard working moms on the move. Happy Saturday!
