Engineering was the occupation I was going for before I enrolled in the bridge program and realized how much math didnt like me. It took some trial an error but I was eventually lead to Advertising and Marketing. If I’d had the opportunity to shadow or at least talk to someone in the field, I would’ve been better prepared.
Making and informed position about your your education which will lead to your career is very important. Who wants to pay 50k for a degree they’ll never use.
Here’s 5 quick tips to find what you’re really good at.
1. What can you see yourself doing for 20 plus years.
Remember you’ll be working for about 40 plus years. You want the career path you settle on to be something comfortable for YOU, not your parents or friends.
2. Explore the field.
Don’t wait until college to start asking questions. You have access to more people than ever. Sign up for linked-in.com and start networking. Professionals love to boast or complain about their careers. Take notes and build relationships. You may work with them one day.
3. Don’t Limit Yourself

Start reaching out to small business owners about their humble beginning. Owning a business is a lot of work so be sure to know what characteristics make for a successful business owner.
4. Shadow
The best way to learn is to do it. Reach out to a business that fits your career needs and ask about volunteering for a week. Be sure to be professional, have a resume ready (even if you’ve never worked. List school assignments and projects.), references and be honest about why you’re volunteering. Make sure you document what you learn.
5. Stay Positive
You’re not going to like every occupation. Some careers are just not for you and that’s fine. It’s better you find out now opposed to after you graduate from college.
